Frequently Asked Questions - Technical

Which versions of Exchange does Mailscape support?

Mailscape currently supports all versions of Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010 SP1.

How is Mailscape licensed?

Mailscape is licensed on a combination of the number of servers monitored and the total number of mailboxes deployed. Each server that you wish to monitor can be licensed. This can include both virtual and passive nodes if desired.

What is the best way to utilize Mailscape?

Mailscape was designed to provide benefit to Help Desk operators, Messaging team members, and Management personnel. By means of Mailscape’s personalized dashboards, each member of the organization can view what is important to them. Many of our customers have found it beneficial to setup a flat panel for Mailscape in their NOC for everyone to see the status of the messaging system. This is not a requirement as Mailscape sends out email alerts and the dashboards can easily be accessed on each person’s workstation or IPad, without installing any software.

Will Mailscape work across a WAN?

Yes. Mailscape was built from the ground up with performance in mind. All monitored components can be individually configured and adjusted based on your network’s needs and requirements. We have numerous multi-national companies who have deployed Mailscape across their WAN.

What are the primary components of Mailscape?

The Mailscape architecture consists of a website installed on a Microsoft IIS server, an agent on the monitored server, and a connection to a Microsoft SQL Server database if you want report customization. Mailscape supports Microsoft SQL Express and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and later versions. You can monitor Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, 2007, and 2010 that run on Windows 2003 or later versions. Communication between the monitored servers and the web server can be configured on any port.

Why was Mailscape created?

Mailscape was created by Exchange Administrators for Exchange Administrators. The job of managing messaging is not an easy one. Microsoft’s best practices guidelines contain many monitoring, administrative and maintenance tasks that must be performed daily. These tasks are time consuming, but necessary to ensure the messaging system stays up and running. Mailscape was created to enable Administrators complete these tasks efficiently and proactively so that email stays up and running.

Some products provide some of the features, but no other single product combines Mailscape’s depth and breadth of features and functionality.
